Becoming the Master of Sushi!

Written by Marcia Riner on April 20th, 2011. Posted in Rollin Sushi Workshop

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the Rolling Sushi Workshop at Riptide.  It was beyond my expectations thanks to Sushi Chef Ken Cruz, a phenomenal educator.  The table was set up beautifully and the participants came hungry!  Cruz started off the workshop by giving a quick background about himself and went straight into the details of sushi-making.

What is soy paper? Why is a sushi knife unique? What type of rice is used in sushi?

They learned about the materials used in the making of a delicious sushi roll and the participants were full of positive energy. I loved it!  They learned how to make a special cut roll ( Crunch Rolls seemed to be the popular choice!), sashimi and hand rolls.  I was very impressed with the particpants when I saw their hand-made sushi rolls.  They looked so professional that they could have started serving them to the rest of the restaurant.

Meet the Caterpillar Roll…

l

After learning all sorts of sushi tricks and digging into their feast they ended the night with a complimentary round of Saki…Bombs…Saki…BOMBS!

Still envious of your Aunt Betty who is known for her Apple Pies?  Well, why don’t you become the sushi master and show off to your family and friends!   We still have more workshops and our next one will be held on Tuesday, April 26th.  Click Here to register.

Round up the ‘troops’ for Rolling Sushi Workshops

Do your kids eat sushi? Many families have a house full of picky eaters…and fish is probably not the first food group that come out of a kids mouth.  I didn’t fully enjoy fish until I was 20 years old, but if I wasn’t so picky and tried it at an earlier age then I am sure I would have fallen in love quickly.  Sushi “dates” are not only for grown-ups to enjoy. I came across an article by Steve Greenlee, “Something’s fishy: kids like sushi,” and I thought it was cute that he pointed out…hey, kids can be sushi eaters too.  The secret is…all of the ingredients are rolled up into a ball of rice [carbs] in a child’s eyes and little do they know, it’s a pretty healthy meal! :) Especially, like in Greenlee’s case, if your spouse doesn’t like sushi then why not recruit the little ones.  Teach your kids how-to make and love sushi at our Rolling Sushi Workshops.

Bring the WHOLE family to our Rolling Sushi Workshop next Tuesday, April 19th at 6:30pm at Riptide Sushi in Mission Viejo.

Sushi Making Workshop was a Success

Written by Marcia Riner on March 9th, 2011. Posted in Rollin Sushi Workshop

Everyone who joined us at Riptide last night has been raving about how much fun it was.  There were about a dozen people in the class. We made 4 different types of sushi, including difficult-to-master hand rolls! We used several types of fish, tempura vegetables, shrimp, avocado, cucumber, tomatoes, wasabi, nori…. and lots of creativity! These workshops will be every week, so sign up today.

“We ate so much sushi, we were stuffed! (And everyone took home their leftovers for another meal later!) We had great music, and lots of laughs. Our sushi chefs Ken & Hector we so much fun – and helped us make some edible art,” said Katie, an enthusatistic attendee.
